The Olympic Games

The opening and closing seremony of olympics were amazing and I watched on the TV two times. Also I watched some games, but the best game was the hokey game which was played in the last day of olympics (Canada and U.S.A).The other interesting thing that I saw everywhere were critters and they are symbol of Vancouver olympic games.Sumi is a spirit animal who lives in mountain and it is mixture of bear, thuderbird and whale who protect the land. Miga is a young bear who likes adventures and Quatchi is a young sasquatch who comes from mysterious forests of Canada. These three mascots greeted all atlets, visitors and fans in Vancouver during olympic and paralmpic. Most people bought these lovely mascots for memory of olympic games in Vancouver.

Eucation System in Turkey and Canada

Education system is the most important point which differs in each country. Comparing education system between Canada and my home country (Turkey,) shows a lot of differences. First, education starts from age seven and each student has to finish grade 12 which is free and compulsory. There are many different subjects that have be thought, for example, reading and writing Turkish alphabets, math, social, history, geography, second language and etc. Students begin their studies by memorizing and do a lot of home work which make more pressure to students and their family. The other point is the number of schools and universities do not match the number of students. Generally, most schools are in urban areas, so for children who live in rural areas, it is very hard to go to school. Sometimes they walk to another locations for a long time with difficulties like weather conditions to go to school. Finally, the most important point is the board examination or in the other words, national exam for entry to the university that students are struggling with it for a long time. Now a day the ministry of education and the directory of universities are discussing to solve the problem and cancel the board exam.
Unlike Turkey, Canadian Students start their education from age four or five that means Kindergarten and then, they continue their studies until grade 12 and also it is free. The way teachers use for teaching is different; from the beginning, they try to make students like their school and their new environment. Students play and then learn and they also are encouraged to discover and research so they can understand what kind of subjects they are interested on. They can easily show their talents and it makes them to be more successful in their future education and their life. Teachers do not believe on more homework in primary school, especially in elementary school and it makes some newcomer parents worry about their children because they believe that without homework their kids cannot be successful. Of course in upper grades they get a lot of homework, but these assignments are more likely researches that help them when they enter to university or college. In addition there are a lot of schools, colleges, and universities in every area and it is easy to find a school close to your house, for example in one location you can find more than two elementary or high schools. At last, because of the adequacy of schools, students do not worry about board exam. There is no Canada-wide entry exam for university. If their average mark during high school is high enough, they can continue their education in university and if not, they can go to college and after two years they can go to university. Each country value education in different ways, but the important thing is without education ,a country cannot develop.

Jelly Shoes

One of crazy fads in 1980’s was Jelly shoes which was very popular and came back in 2003.I think young women at that time could not forget this fancy shoes. The most popularity of these plastic shoes was in European countries. Jelly shoes were cheap and fashion designers made them in different colors, so they are very attractive. Women, especially young women could not stop looking to these colorful, transparent shoes for their summer holidays. They spent their money to buy different colors. Once, I tried, but the result was terrible; I cannot stand for an hour! Although, they looked beautiful they were not comfortable. There is no matter how these shoes comfortable, healthy or not, people like to follow fashions and being a part of a group.

Improving Vocabulary

Improving English language is everyone’s primary goal. There are a lot of methods to learn, and of course it varies to everyone. For learning English we need English words (vocabulary). More English words we learn make us to understand and use them more and more in daily speech. Some prefer to memorize or look up in the dictionary, and for some it is better to use flash cards or reading as much as they can. We also can use the way which toddlers use to learn automatically. They do not need take lessons! For example my two year old daughter knows a lot of words which I do not know yet. We don’t speak English at home, but the only way she can learn is watching TV. She listens many times and catches a new word, then tries to use it when she is speaking. She uses it as much as she can to complete this word in her brain and then another word starts. There is another way but, it is better to sat it a game—Scramble-- which is not only fun also is very useful to learn English words. I think this game is popular in every country. You must think carefully to find right words to win, and also you can learn a lot of vocabularies from the people in your group .There are no limit age for this game, so you can play it with your family. Cross word-word puzzle is other way that you can learn different words and renew your general knowledge as well.
